Abstract: The oxidation of thioglycollic, thiolactic and thiomalic acids by quinolinium fluorochromate (QFC) is first order in QFC. The reaction exhibits Michaelis-Menten type of kinetics with respect to the thioacid. The reaction is catalyzed by hydrogen ions. The hydrogen ion dependence has the form: kobs' = a + b [H+]. The oxidation of thiolactic acid has been studied in 19 oragnic solvents. The solvent effect has been analysed using Kamlet's and Swain's multiparametric equations. A mechanism involving the formation of a thioester and its decomposition in the slow step has been proposed.
