Abstract: A simple column chromatographic separation method has been developed for the separation of iron(III) from associated elements using poly-( dibenzo-18-crown-6) from hydrochloric acid medium. The separation of iron(III) has been achieved by exploiting the adsorption and elution behaviour of iron(III) and other metal ions. Amongst the various eluents tested, 0.5-3.0 M HBr, 0.5-2.0 M HCI, 0.1-8.0 MHClO4, H2SO4 have been found to be particularly efficient for the quantitative elution of iron(III). The capacity of poly-( dibenzo-18-crown-6 ) for iron(III) is found to be 14.324 m mol / g of PDB 18C6. Effective separation of Fe(III) from binary and multicomponent mixtures has also been achieved. The method has been used to determine iron in number of certified rock samples. The method is simple. rapid, selective and has good reproducibility(± 2 %).
