Title: Ru(lll) catalysed oxidation of a-hydroxy acids by iodate- A kinetic study

Abstract: Ru(III) acts as a catalyst in the oxidation of a-hydroxy acids by iodate. The reaction is found to be first order in [oxidant], and [Ru(III)] and fractional order in [hydroxy acid]. H+ ions retard the reaction. A mechanism, involving the formation of a complex between Ru(III) and hydroxy acid which interacts with HIO3 in a slow step, is proposed.
