Abstract: At 25.0±0.1°C and l=1.0 mol dm-3 (NaCIO4) oxidation of 1,4-benzenediol by trisoxalatocobaltate (III) conforms to the rate law: -1/2 d[Co(ox)3]/dt= k2 [CO(ox)3][H2O] (ox=oxalate ion, H2O=1,4-benzenediol (hydroquinone) with k2=(1.65±0.16)x10-3 mol-1 dm3 s-I. The reaction is acid independent in the range O.02≤[H+]≤0.50 mol dm-3. The absence of both spectroscopic and kinetic evidence of complex formation and the non-conformity of our results with the Michaelis-Menten equation suggest that this reaction most probably occurs by outer sphere mechanism.
