Title: Synthesis, characterization and reactions of sodium monoazidoethylenediaminetetraacetatocobaltate( III)

Abstract: Sodium monoazidoethylenediaminetetraacetatocobaltate( III), (I) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectral analysis. The presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding is suggested based on pKa measurements. The kinetics of the acid hydrolysis of [Co(HEDTA)N3]- to give [Co(EDTA)- is studied and the results are compared with those [Co(HEDTA)X]- ions where X = Cl or Br. The activation parameters have also been calculated and the applicability of the compensation law has been checked. A mechanistic scheme has been proposed for the acid-catalysed hydrolysis of the azido complex ion.
