Abstract: The influence of magnetic field (MF) on the copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile has been studied. The copolymerization characteristics i.e., copolymer composition, monomer reactivity ratios and monomer sequence distribution in the copolymer chain have been analyzed. The content of acrylonitrile in the copolymer SAN prepared under MF is higher than that obtained without MF. The reactivity ratio of acrylonitrile is higher and that of styrene is lower under MF than for copolymerization without MF. SAN prepared under MF has more alternating monomer sequence than ordinary SAN. The two different monomers, styrene and acrylonitrile, and their radicals are influenced by MF differently. Consequently, the MF alters the copolymer characteristics. The influence of MF on the Q-e scheme has been discussed and a modified Q-e scheme under MF proposed.
