Abstract: Periodic outbursts of phytoplankton blooms are reported in the Visakhapatnam Harbour waters from April to November 1976. These blooms are dominated by a single species of a centric diatom, Skeletonema costatum. An attempt has been made to correlate hydrographical and weather parameters with the phytoplanktonic outbursts. It is suggested that the discharge of large scale domestic and industrial effluents and stagnation of the harbour waters owing to inadequate tidal flushing may be contributory factors in the enrichment of nutrients of the harbour waters.
