Abstract: Variations of Es with sunspot activity (R2) have been studied, analyzing different parameters representing the Es layer, from the Ionospheric Data Bulletins, The percentage occurrence of fb Es > 4 MHz is found to be the most reliable parameter for studying the structure of Es layer from the point of view of the zonal representation. The behaviour of the occurrences of blanketing type of sporadic E with regard to sunspot variation at the equatorial station Huancayo, is found to be markedly different from the behaviour observed at two other non-equatorial stations Maui and Rarotonga. This difference in the behaviour observed at Huancayo is attributed to the equatorial electrojet control on the Es layer. A theoretical model has been given in terms of the equatorial electrojet control, which seems to explain satisfactorily the observed variations of the blanketing Es layer at Huancayo.
