Abstract: A new source function which parametrically represents the combined effects of wind forcing, wave-wave interactions and dissipative losses, is suggested for the wind wave transport equation. The new source function has a tan hyperbolic form with four tunable wind dependent coefficients. Its forecast performance for duration limited cases is compared with that of the conventional source function (viz, the Complimentary Error Function type) through the numerical integration of the wave transport equation. With the new source function, the wave height forecast errors are found to be < 8% with respect to known wave growth nomograms, while the errors are 15-28% for the conventional source function.
