Title: Proton & Electron Components in Galactic Cosmic Rays

Abstract: An analysis is made to understand the ratio of protons to electrons in cosmic rays observed in the near vicinity of the earth. The deviation of this ratio from unity, even after correcting for interplanetary and interstellar effects, is examined in detail. The variation of this ratio with energy is also studied. Two types of sources are postulated, one giving rise to a power law spectrum in rigidity (arising from betatron type of acceleration mechanism) and the other a power law spectrum in ϒ, the Lorentz factor (arising from either Fermi acceleration or shockwave acceleration mechanism). It has also been suggested that these two types of sources can actually arise in the same supernova, the shockwave acceleration being effective after the outburst and the betatron acceleration being effective in the remnant.
