Abstract: A method of separation of D- and E-region contributions to the total absorption using Jaeger's formulae is discussed. The total absorption of radio waves reflected from E-layer is interpreted as' arising due to a three-tier model electron density, viz. a Chapman type E-layer, a Chapman type upper D-layer and a constant electron density in the lower D-region represented by
LT = D + B cos nE + C cos nD where the exponents nE and nD (cos indices for E- and D-region absorptions) have values of 0.87 and 1.0 respectively. These experimental results are explained successfully using Jaeger's theory of ionospheric absorption of radio waves.
