dc.description.abstractVariations in moisture, protein, glycogen and lipid levels in entire body, and in selected body parts such as mantle + gonad and foot of Musculista senhnusia were studied in relation to the reproductive cycle. Energy storage prior to gonad development followed by utilisation of pre-stored reserves for gametogenesis was observed during different developmental stages of the gonad. Protein, glycogen and lipid were very low during active spawning period, but moisture level showed an inverse relationship in entire body and foot. In mantle + gonad, along with the other energy reserves, moisture level also decreased during spawning, probably because of the shrinkage of tissue due to the release of gametes. The foot glycogen and lipid were used for maintenance demands during later gametogenic stages and spawning. After spawning in late summer, energy reserves reached the low ebb, possibly contributing to the mortality characteristic of post-spawn mussels of this species.en_US
