Abstract: Model electron density distributions in the ionosphere over Delhi for summer and winter, in low and high solar activity periods, are prepared on the general scheme of International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) models of Rawer et al. [Rawer K, Ramakrishnan S & Bilitza D, IPW scient. rep. W.B. 2, Institut fur Physika-Iische, Weltraumforschung, Freiburg, F.R.G., 1975] with additional considerations mainly of local measurements. For lower heights, D-layer models given by Chakrabarty and Mitra [Chakrabarty D K & Mitra A P, Indian J. Radio Space Phys., 3 (1974), 76] are matched to foE values from local ionosonde measurements. Bottomside F-Iayer profiles are from N-h data reduced from local ionograms. Topside slopes according to IRI models, matched to local foF2 values, gave total electron content values often at variance with values of electron content locally measured with orbiting satellites BE-B and BE-C, necessitating some adjustments of the slopes. It is found that the diurnal variation of the modified topside slopes follows the same diurnal pattern as that of equivalent slab thickness of the total electron content.
