Title: Computation of Joule Dissipation in the Ionosphere

Abstract: Rocket measurements of electron and current densities made by several workers have been utilized to calculate the Joule heating of the upper atmosphere. The results show significant diurnal variation. It is argued that heating caused by dissipation of internal gravity waves due to thermal conductivity, viscosity and ion drag may also be sometimes of comparable magnitude. A numerical comparison of these two results has been attempted with the help of some recent calculations by other workers of gravity wave dissipation for different waves and atmospheric conditions.
