dc.description.abstractAn aecount of the progress of research on atmospheric chemistry in the last 50 years in the context of Indian activities is presented. Three separate phases are discussed. The first phase was concerned with the studies in the 30's to 50's on the origin, stratification and distribution of ionospheric ionization. The second phase started with the observations with rockets and satellites, during and after the IGY and consisted of measurements onion composition in the ionosphere and the ion chemistry developed to explain the preponderance of NO+ ions in the E and F regions and tire water cluster ions in the D region. The third phase began in the 70’s when the question of depletion of stratospheric ozone by human activities was brought up.en_US
