Abstract: Features of an unusual partial counter electrojet observed on 21 July 1976 are discussed by comparing the VHF backscatter radar signals, equatorial ionograms, TEC measurements and surface magnetograms on that day and neighbouring quiet days. It is shown that the radar signals close to local noon hours exhibited features in conflict with the general expectations. This may be attributed to the strong influence of local scale irregularities at the appropriate ionospheric heights.
