Title: High-resolution measurements of horizontal wind using ST mode of the Indian MST radar: A comparison with balloon measurements

Abstract: Clear-air radars are widely used for measuring atmospheric windfield with good height and time resolutions. Indian MST radar is one such radar which has been installed recently at Gadanki (13.47°N, 79.18°E) near Tirupati. A number of experiments were carried out during December 1991-may 1992 to measure horizontal wind using ST mode of this system. An intercomparison has been mad of the radar and simultaneous balloon measurements from Madras (13.04°N, 80.7°E) and SHAR (13.7°N, 80.2°E). The radar observations show a remarkable consistency in the height profiles of both the meridional and zonal wind components. The radar and balloon wind profiles are found to be generally in good agreement. Significant differences have, however, been noted at times, indicating that winds could be highly localized occasionally. A regression analysis of the radar and balloon-measured wind components shows that they are highly correlated (r~0.9). The r.ms. deviations of the Madras radiosonde measurements from that of the radar are 2 m/s and 3 m/s for the meridional and zonal wind components respectively. The corresponding deviations with values of 3 m/s and 4 m/s are slightly greater for the SHAR centre.
