Abstract: To test statistically the validity of magnetic reconnection theory, a study of geomagnetic activity and of the plasma sheet (PS) dynamics during the solar cycle 1965-86 was carried out. It was found that during the thinning of the plasma sheet alone, the p[potential drop () across the plasma sheet, the power transferred (P) and the energy released (E) during the selected 44 substorm events were maximum. The dependence of , P and E with Kp index and sunspot number () were verified.
