Title: Non-adiabatic behaviour of the substorm-time geomagnetotail plasma sheet at the geosynchronous orbit

Abstract: The thermodynamic behaviour of the near-earth plasma sheet (NEPS) during substorms at geosynchronous distance is analysed. A total of 22 isolated substorm events occurred in the solar maxaimum years 1978 and 1979 were selected. The measured ion pressure Pi, the ion density Ni and the magnetic field B at the site of GEOS-2 satellite were used to obtain the value of the polytropic index ϒ which determines the adiabatic/non-adiabatic behaviour of the plasma sheet. The ϒ- value obtained suggests that the NEPS behaves non-adiabatically at substorm onsets. It is also shown that the plasma sheet behaviour at the geosynchronous orbit during substorms is not described either by the adiabatic equation of state or by the constant magnetic moment equation.
