Abstract: The reaction between cellulose powder and tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride has been studied under different conditions of pH and thermal curing using the infrared technique. The data obtained have been analyzed and compared with those for the reactions between cellobiose, THPC, thiourea and ammonium dihydrogen orthophosphate. The data have been used for understanding the mechanism whereby THPC-based [formulations impart flame-resistant characteristics to cellulose.
