Abstract: Cotton cellulose was subjected to single and multiple swelling treatments with anhydrous ethylamine and 99 % ethylenediamine. The effects of monoamine and diamine treatments on the fine structure of cellulose were found to be similar. The current theory of swelling action of amines on cotton cellulose has been modified. In the light of fresh evidence, the theory of the diamine molecules crosslinking the neighboring cellulosic chain is found to be untenable.
