Abstract: 2-Amino-6-phenylazobenzothiazole has been prepared in high yield (93%) by the interaction of ammonium thiocyanate and bromine in glacial acetic acid. The resulting heterocyclic amine was diazotized in phosphoric-nitric acid 'mixture and was coupled with various coupling components to get azo dyes. Some of the dyes in the series showed good pick up and fastness on polyester fibre.
