Abstract: A simple method for the quantitative measurement of softness of barky root-ends of jute has been developed. The method consists in measuring the impact strength of barky jute by the IJIRA impact strength tester and using this parameter for measuring the degree of softness within certain limits. The relationship between the impact strength and the fibre separation index of barky root-ends of jute has been studied. The impact strength is found to be linearly related both to subjective softness and fibre separation index. The effect of the moisture content of barky root-ends of jute on its impact strength has also been studied.
