Abstract: An improved mechanism for the propulsion and retardation of the shuttle has been designed. Its special feature is in controlling the movement of picker such that after propulsion the picking stick is brought to rest without any impact on the buffer, and on the return journey of the shuttle, it is set into motion in the same direction as the approaching shuttle and thus receives the shuttle with less impact. The mechanism consists of a 4-bar planar mechanism connected in series with a 4-bar spatial 2R 2G mechanism. Experimental trials on this mechanism showed considerable improvements over the conventional system with respect to the magnitude of peak retardation of the shuttle, impact between the picking stick and buffer, and power consumption.
