Abstract: The mechanical properties of ethylenediamine (EDA)-treated cottons were investigated. EDA swelling removed, to a certain extent, the weak links in cotton fibres and gave a fairly uniform tensile strength for all the gauge lengths. The yield point of the elastic curve also shifted and the mechanical properties seemed to agree well with those observed by earlier workers. Further evidence that the swelling by EDA is totally different from that due to mercerization was adduced. For comparison, the results obtained by mercerization are also reported.
