Abstract: An instrumental method of determining the degree of whiteness of bleached cotton fabrics was devised. Seven proposed whiteness indices were tested against visual assessment; four of them, namely Cores' Simple, Stephenson's, yellowness index and the Judd and Hunter's whiteness index formulae, gave a high positive rank correlation coefficient. Limits for ratings, giving a qualitative description of whiteness, were set for each of these indices. The proposed whiteness evaluating system, on assessment, was found satisfactory.
