Abstract: The rate of thermal decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was studied kinetically at various pH levels, using buffered baths. The thermal stability of peroxide could be increased many-fold by employing an improvized formulation for the bleaching bath. Bleaching of both raw and demineralized jute fibres with this recipe was favoured at lower alkaline pH and the detrimental effect of inherent mineral matter of jute could be eliminated to a great extent. The reaction mechanism of peroxide bleaching is discussed in the light of the experimental evidence.
