Abstract: Graft copolymerization of acrylic acid onto jute fibres was carried out using KHSO5 as initiator and Fe(II)as catalyst in an aqueous medium under nitrogen atmosphere and it was observed that graft yield is affected by the reaction time, temperature, monomer conc., initiator conc., catalyst conc., reaction medium and base polymer. Grafting was carried out in presence of various salts and organic solvents. The maximum graft yield obtained was 76.2%. Various properties of the graft copolymers were also studied. A suitable mechanism for the decomposition of the initiator and graft initiation and termination has been suggested.
