Abstract: Eight monoazo disperse dyes, 3-amino-1-arylazo-2-napthols and 2-amino-1-arylazo-3-napthols, were prepared by coupling 3-amino-2-napthol with substituted phenyl diazonium salts in alkaline and acidic conditions and their dyeing performance on polyester and polyamide fibres was assessed. The dyeings had red, red brown, red violet and blue violet shades on polyster and red, red brown and red violet shades on polyamide. The dyes showed good pick-up, poor to good light fastness, moderate to good sublimation fastness, poor to moderate perspiration fastness and excellent rubbing fastness.
