Abstract: | Graft copolymerization of acrylic acid onto flax and oxy flax fibres was carried out in aqueous solution using Ce(IV) as initiator and the effects of the concentration of reactants, reaction time, temperature and reaction medium on grafting were studied. The maximum graft yields of 66.4% and 154.15% were obtained for natural and oxy flax fibres respectively. The water retention and tensile modulus of acrylic acid-grafted flax fibres increased with increase in % grafting. Increase in % grafting (> 32.2%) also increased the thermal stability of grafts at higher temperatures (> 350°C). |
