Abstract: Thirteen samples of palmyra fibres were tested for flexural stiffness using a simple experimental set-up. A parallel array of fibres was supported at the ends on a pair of knife-edges and loaded in the middle. The load applied and the depression produced at the midpoint were measured by dial gauges that formed parts of a fabric compressibility tester.The stiffness determined in this manner was found to have good correspondence with fibre linear density. This result has led to the conclusion that the trade practice of grading palmyra fibres according to linear density is adequate for a classification with respect to stiffness as well.
