Abstract: Degumming of crepe silk fabric has been carried out at 2.2, 7.0 and 10.2 pH using tartaric acid, water and carbonate-bicarbonate buffer respectively and the degummed fabric has been tested for its aesthetic-, performance-, comfort-, strength- and cost-oriented properties. Acid-degummed silk has been found to give the best results followed by alkali-degummed silk. With better strength retention, wicking, wettability and permeability, acid-degummed silk is expected to be more comfortable in use.
