Abstract: 10-Chloroanthracene-9-aldehyde (I) obtained from anthrone was condensed with compounds containing active methyl or methylene group in refluxing acetic acid in the presence of fused sodium acetate to give a variety of 10-chloro-9-(β, β-substituted)ethenylanthracenes (III). The chloroanthracenes thus obtained were converted to 10-cyano-9-(β,β-substituted)ethenylanthracenes (IV) by the treatment with cuprous cyanide in refluxing DMF. The fluorescent properties of IV were studied. When applied on polyester fibres these. compounds gave bright yellow shades with greenish fluorescence having moderate to good pick-up, moderate light fastness and good to very good sublimation fastness.
