Abstract: Fe(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of cellulose ammonium dithiophosphate have been synthesized and characterized by reflectance UV-visible spectra. The thermal degradation of cotton, cellulose ammonium dithiophosphate and its metal complexes has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic thermogravimetry in static air. Using the method of Broido [J Polym Sci, A2, 7 (1969) 1761], the energies of activation for the decomposition of cotton and cellulose ammonium dithiophosphate have been found to be 176.50 and 46.45 kJ mol-1 respectively. From the resulting data, various thermodynamic parameters for the decomposition stage of thermal degradation have been obtained. The IR spectra of the chars of cellulose ammonium dithiophosphate indicate the formation of compounds containing C=O, P-S-P and P=O groups.
