Abstract: Forty fluorescent brighteners, 4,4' -bis[(4-p-fluoroanilino/azido-6-arylureidol arylthioureido-s-triazin-2-yI)aminolstilbene-2,2 -disulphonic acids (V 1-40) have been prepared by condensing 4,4 '-diaminostilbene 2,2 -disulphonic acid (I) with two mol of cyanuric chloride (II) followed by reaction with two mol of p-fluoroaniline/sodium azide and then condensation with two mol of arylurea/arylthiourea derivatives. The absorption characteristics and fastness properties of these compounds on cotton and nylon fibres have also been evaluated. All the compounds show moderate to good fastness to light, washing, perspiration and chlorine on cotton whereas poor to very good fastness to light, washing, perspiration and chlorine on nylon. These compounds also show poor to good sublimation fastness on these fibres and are stable to reducing agents.
