Abstract: Various degumming agents have been compared in terms of the extent of gum removed and the changes in mechanical properties of the degummed silk using the silk yarns of Chinese, Bangalore and Murshidabad varieties. The rates of degumming with respect to time have also been determined for various degumming agents. Complete degumming could be achieved for all the three varieties of silk in the case of alkaline degumming agents. With in this group, degumming with ethylene diamine is most effective. Enzymatic degumming is suitable only in the case of Murshidabad silk. Degumming with tartaric acid is not satisfactory at the temperature (93°C) investigated.
