Abstract: The suitability of carboxymethyl guaran derivatives as thickeners in printing of cotton fabrics with reactive dyes has been studied. It is observed that the colour strength of the printed fabrics depends upon the nature of the thickener used, time allowed before printing, means of colour fixation and the nature of the reactive dye used. Cotton fabrics printed using carboxymethyl guaran of DS 1.27 or more have soft handle and exhibit overall fastness properties nearly identical to those of the fabrics printed using sodium alginate. Cotton fabrics printed using Carboxymethyl guaran of low DS (0.77) acquire higher K/S but their handle is harsh. The stability of the printing pastes on storing has also been investigated.
