Abstract: Handloom woven carpets on being evaluated by subjective and objective test methods were observed to have direct co-relation of their performance characteristics with the pile density. The test results indicate that the fibre characteristics have no significant influence on functional properties of carpets, whereas the same are significantly influenced by constructional parameters. The pile density plays a key role in affecting the pile thickness loss and its recovery, and also the durability of the carpet. The subjective test results indicate that the carpet samples possessing lesser pile density, and hence low pile weight, did not appeal to the judges who used visual appraisal and handle as tools for the judgement.
