Abstract: Decorticated ramie fibres were degummed for different durations using the culture of Aspergillus flavus and then bleached with different concentrations of bleaching powder solution. It has been observed that the microbial treatments for 5 and 7 days remove 58.78% and 73.12% gum respectively without deterioration in fibre qualities. For the same concentration of bleaching powder solution and treatment time, the microbial treatment for 5 days is the best when the physical properties like tensile strength are considered. The fungal treatment for 7 days is suggested for better brightness and fibre fineness.
