Abstract: The sorption of Cd(ll) on bituminous coal has been found to be dependent on contact time, concentration, temperature and pH. The process of removal follows first order kinetics. The temperature dependence indicates the endothermic nature of process. Alkaline aqueous medium favours the removal of Cd(ll) by bituminous coal. The increase in sorption of Cd(ll) with pH has been explained on the basis of interaction with organic as well as inorganic matters present in coal. Intraparticle diffusion has been found to be a rate limiting step.
