Title: Spectrophotometric determination of mercury (II) with 5-(2'-carboxyphenyl) azo-8-quinolinol

Abstract: 5-(2-Carboxyphenyl)azo-8-quinolinol forms a reddish violet complex with mercury(II) in aqueous medium at pH 4.4-6.5. The 2:1 (ligand to metal) complex is formed instantaneously, remains stable for at least 20 h and adheres to Beer's law in the range 0.03-0.18 ug of mercury(II) per mL. The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of the method are 6.05 x 104 L mol-1 cm-1 and 0.003 mg cm-2, respectively, at 555 nm.
