Abstract: Physicochemical water quality parameters of effluents from an industrial area in Hyderabad have been determined. Treatment of the effluents with activated charcoal has been carried out at different pH values for different periods of time. Reduction in colour of the effluents is also studied at different pH values by measuring the absorption at 390nm. It is found that maximum reduction of colour is obtained at a pH of 2.07 when the sample is treated for 3 h. Adsorption isotherms are developed for the effluents under different experimental conditions which may be useful for the design of wastewater treatment plants. Kinetics of adsorption and Langmuir constants are evaluated.
