Abstract: The reaction of 4-picoline with nitric oxide for the synthesis of 4-cyanopyridine has been studied over nickel oxide-iron oxide catalyst in the temperature range 280-360°C.  A maximum yield (88%) of 4-cyanopyridine is obtained at a temperature of 320°C over a catalyst NiO:Fe2O3 ::40:60 at a NO/picoline mole ratio 50. Kinetic studies reveal that the mechanism of the reaction is of the "Redox” type. A tentative mechanism of the process is also suggested.
