Abstract: Benthal sludge deposits undergo active aerobic and/or anaerobic decomposition in river bottoms with their end products slowly leaching into the overlying waters and thus utilizing the waters dissolved oxygen. In this paper, the oxygen consumption at different flow rates of overlying water and the oxygen consumption rates at the overlying waters top layers and bottom layers in contact with benthal sludge are discussed. Models have been developed to predict the oxygen consumption at different flow rates of overlying waters.
