Abstract: Conical whirl instability of an unloaded rigid rotor supported in a turblent flow plain hydrodynalnic journal bearing has been studied tlleoretically, following Constantinescu's turbulent lubrication theory. The effect of Reyn9lds number (Re) and aspect ratio (L/D) on the stability of rotor-bearing system has been investigated. It is observed that stability improves with increase in both Re and (L/D) ratio of bearings.
