Abstract: A theoretical framework is presented to relate recursive parameters to the commonly observed exponential variation of normalized headloss in slow sand filters. The recursive parameters may not always sum to unity in a calibration procedure based on the minimization of square of residual errors between computed and observed outputs. To obtain recursive parameters, normalization of filter headloss is necessary. The recursive algorithms are useful for short term prediction of slow sand filter performance.
