Abstract: This paper describes the high voltage electrical breakdown analysis of Magnetron Injection Gun which is the most important part of 42GHz gyrotron. The gyrotron MIG is a triode type gun which consists of a single cathode and two anodes (namely modulating and accelerating anode) at voltages 29kV, 65kV, respectively with large negative cathode voltage. This is the kind of triode type gun having more technical complexity in the design and fabrication. Therefore, under the high voltage condition (operational) and due to the design complexity of MIG it becomes possible that the electrical stress increase more than the theoretically designed acceptable value of the breakdown voltage i.e. 5kV/mm. So breakdown voltage analysis becomes more significant to avoid the causes of failure for any kind of microwave tubes. Hence, the paper presents the high voltage electrical breakdown analysis done with the help of two different softwares TRAK and FEMM 4.2 and validate their simulation results with the acceptable breakdown condition for the design of MIG.
