Abstract: An account of the organizational set up of the information service in the USSR has been given. The way powers and functions are delegated through the hierarchy of agencies down to the ultimate units at the base, and the way co-ordination is maintained by the principal agencies at the apex have been highlighted. Important publications of the information agencies have been mentioned and their methods of compilation described. A remarkable feature of the Soviet information system is the close proximity and cooperation of information service and information techniques. A number of reprographic and information retrieval machines designed and developed at the VINITI have been described.
