Abstract: The impact of the Referativnyi Zhurnal on the use of non-Russian literature by Soviet scientists is sought to be measured from the citation analysis of articles in two Russian physics journals, viz. Doklaudi Academia Nauk and the Uspekhi Fizicheskikh Nauk, covering a period before the advent of the Referativnyi Zhurnal and another period when the abstracting service had established itself. The two samples yielded a total of 8.485 citations. The impact is observed through an increase in the average number of references per paper an increase in the number of English references per paper and an Increase in the number of English periodical a cited by the Soviet scientists in the period after the advent of the abstracting service.
