Abstract: Lutein (C4OH56O2) is the primary xanthophyll pigment that produces orange color in marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) flowers, composing roughly 90%of the petals identified pigments. This pigment from marigold is currently used as additive in poultry feed, food coloring and neutrace uticals. The increasing demand for marigold pigment has paved the way for genetic upgradation and expansion of cultivation of this flower within the country, Eight accessions of Tagetes erecta L. collected from various locations in India were introduced and cultivated under mid hills of Kangra Valley (H.P.) following uniform cultural practices. The accessions were assessed for growth performance, flower color, xanthophyll content and flower yield. Xanthophyll content was found highest in orange flowers in all the accessions. Promising accessions were selected and inbred to get pure lines with orange flower heads, The flower yield of the pure lines ranged from 61-78 qt/ha and xanthophyll yield varied from (2.5-5.0 kg/ha). The pure lines with xanthophyll content of 0.71, 1.4 and 0.9 were selected and combined by single and polycross method for hybrid and composite seed production. The flower yield of the progeny raised from hybrid and composite seed out yielded the inbred lines due to heterosis. It is concluded that Marigold can be cultivated as a successful industrial crop in H.P. and there is great scope for its improvement for xanthophylls (lutein).
